Spoiler-free notes: It's cool that Picard gets so excited about something that it can actually make him nervous. This character trait makes him feel more real. This is the second episode in a row that deals with a recurring guest star, and this one deals with two (Vash and Q). As I understand it, the actress plating Vash, Jennifer Hetrick, was engaged to Patrick Stewart when this episode was filming. If I didn't know better, I'd say Q was jealous. Vash is way too quick to accept her situation, especially once she learns that she's in the middle of Robin Hood. A nice bit of behind-the-scenes irony: the only regular cast members who knew how to swordfight prior to this episode were Marina Sirtis and Gates McFadden, the two actors who don't pick up swords in this episode. I like how this episode starts, with a side of Picard we've all seen on Risa (namely, Vash) clashing with his professional life as Captain, and I don't even mind Q showing up. As soon as the Robin Hood stuff starts, though, it just gets too absurd for me. I can appreciate that the cast and crew are enjoying themselves and that this episode is all in good fun, but--I don't know--it just doesn't do it for me. It's all goof and gags. I'm not opposed to episodes like this one--there seems to be at least one a season--but I feel like this particular episode lessens the impact of both Vash and Q. Vash doesn't reappear on TNG, but she does appear, with Q, in the DS9 episode "Q-Less." | |||||||||||
